Who are the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)?
According to the DAR website (www.dar.org), the organization was founded in 1890 with the mission of “promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism”. The nonprofit volunteer-based women’s service organization consists of over 185,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the world. Any woman 18 years or older may join the DAR by documenting her lineage to an ancestor who “aided the cause of American independence through military, civil or patriotic service”. The DAR National Headquarters is located in Washington, D.C., and houses the organization’s offices, genealogical library, and historic document collection.
Members participate in activities such as:
- Restoring and maintaining historic sites
- Preserving historic records and artifacts
- Locating, restoring, and marking Revolutionary War Patriot grave sites and headstones
- Promoting education and citizenship through youth programs
- Volunteering to assist military veterans
- Sponsoring programs that promote the Constitution
